Microinteractions | Dan Saffer

10 nov 2014, by Luisa Valente in all, books, events

Swipe to unlock, press to play a song, click to start: they are the so-called microinteractions. They are everywhere and make the difference between an excellent design and design nightmare to forget. This is the topic of the next meeting of the UX Book Club, opened to experts and enthusiasts of design and User Experience.

Each month the discussion is inspired by a book: this time we chose a great classic of the User Experience by Dan Saffer, a leading contemporary designer who studied this kind of interactions:

ABOUT THE BOOK
The book (November 2013 edition) covers these main items:

  • Microinteraction’s structure: triggers, rules, feedback, modes, and loops
  • Types of triggers that initiate a microinteraction
  • Creation of simple rules that define how a microinteraction can be used
  • Helping users understand the rules with feedback, using graphics, sounds, and vibrations
  • Using modes to let users set preferences or modify a microinteraction
  • Extending a microinteraction’s life with loops, such as “Get data every 30 seconds”
