Engagement is the ultimate challenge in the field of User Experience: how to capture the attention of people, fragmented into micro-interactions with a multitude of products, apps, services? How to keep the interest alive through a significant series of experience? How to integrate into the design process the individual characteristics, the characteristics of the context and the technological aspects? How to drive it to create value?

The World Usability Day is an annual event, promoted on a global scale since 2005 by a community of professionals working in different sectors (industry, education, public administration, research). They all share a common goal: ensuring that the technology works to promote the expression of individuals and active global citizenship.

The WUD 2014 is dedicated to the theme of engagement. The experiences gallery of the Italian session spans from mobility to storytelling, innovative services, healthcare and wellbeing, tourism, gamification and many other subjects and application fields. Here is the program of the event.

The Italian meeting, hold in I3P, Turin, on the 13th Novembre 2014, was promoted by the Piedmont Section of the Italian Society of Ergonomics (SIE), with Istituto Superiore Mario Boella (ISMB), Telecom Italy, Laboratory of Experimental and Applied Ergonomics of Naples (LEAS) and University of Milano Bicocca, with the organizational support of Ecotarget. The event was Sponsored by Politecnico di Torino, Turin University and the Order of Psychologists of Piedmont.

With some members of UX TORINO we were at WUD to revise our idea of engagement and we got lots of insights to improve our daily UX design activity (the image below is an abstract from Barilla’s World Football Championship 2014 Campaign).

Among curiosities, a couple of tools for massive analysis of selfies (SelfiExploratory and  Phototrails).
